After a general introduction on meteorites and answering basic questions such as what do we learn from them? What drives us to search and to study them? and presenting some anecdotes on some historical meteorite falls and finds, Dr. Ferrière will discuss the meteorites that are known in the UAE. He will conclude his session with a presentation on what is planned in term of meteorites at the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, not only in the exhibition but also in the backstage in term of research projects on meteorites at the Museum.
Dr. Ludovic Ferrière, born in 1982, is a French geologist, expert on meteorites and impact craters. He developed an early interest in rocks and minerals, studied in a number of French and Canadian Universities before to obtain a Master in Planetology at the University Pierre and Marie Curie in Paris (France). He completed his PhD thesis at the University of Vienna (Austria) in 2009, before to move again to Canada for his postdoctoral researches at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Ferrière was then working at the Natural History Museum Vienna (Austria) from 2011 until early 2024, first as curator of the rock collections and then as chief curator of the prestigious meteorite collection and of the impactite collection.
Currently, Dr. Ferrière is curator of geology and meteorites at the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi.
Dr. Ferrière has confirmed, together with colleagues, five impact craters (i.e., Keurusselkä in Finland, Luizi in the DRCongo, Hummeln in Sweden, Yallalie in Australia, and Nova Colinas in Brazil) and has also discovered and classified a number of meteorites.
He is author of 120 peer-reviewed scientific papers published in international journals, over 250 abstracts presented at international conferences, and of a book on meteorites.
